Riparian buffers are just as important in brackish and salt water environments as in freshwater rivers and streams. Evensong on Indian River in Chesapeake, Virginia provides an excellent example in an urban setting.
Here, where space is limited, a 4′ wide buffer along the full length of a 110′ bulkhead has been planted in nearly all salt tolerant native species and is now fully chemical free. An intertidal oyster reef populated annually from cage raised oysters is a bonus feature at this site.
