ABOUT THE SPEAKERS

Keith Tomlinson - Keith Tomlinson is an interpretive natiuralist, gardener and Managing Director of Meadowlark Botanical Gardens in Vienna, Virginia. Previously, Keith worked as landscape gardener in Hawaii, Oregon, West Virginia and Virginia. Keith's work and travels as a gardening naturalist have taken him to more than 100 botanic gardens in Europe, America, Africa and the Pacific. This work earned him a fellowshop with the Washington DC Academy of Sciences in 2003. Keith is particularly interested in urban landscapes becoming more "eco-friendly" and the conservation of plant diversity world-wide.  He is a Natural History Tour Leader for the Smithsonian Associates, the author of numerous technical and popular articles and a consultant for the Smithsonian Guides to Natural America and World Wildlife Funds Biodiversity Basics curriculum. http://www.nvrpa.org/parks/meadowlark/index.php

Doug Tallamy - Doug Tallamy is Professor and Chair of the Department of Entomology and Wildlife Ecology at the University of Delaware in Newark, Delaware, where he has authored over 65 research articles and has taught Insect Taxonomy, Behavioral Ecology, and other courses for 26 years. Chief among his research goals is to better understand the many ways insects interact with plants and how such interactions determine the diversity of animal communities. Doug BeischMr. Doug Beisch, Sr. Water Resource Engineer at the Williamsburg Environmental Group, has more than 10 years of experience in the field of stormwater management and surface water quality management. Beisch is responsible for design, modeling and supervision of plan and project reviews for federal, state and local, commercial, residential, institutional, and transportation projects, with regard to stormwater management, Low Impact Development (LID), non-point source pollutant mitigation, Best Management Practice design, drainage design and hydrologic analyses. Beisch has experience assisting local program staff with policy interpretations and stormwater program administration. He also developed technical criteria for the Chesapeake Bay Preservation Act implementation, and provided statewide guidance related to stormwater management and water quality management. He has actively planned and conducted training workshops in the fields of Low Impact Development, drainage design, Best Management Practice design, stormwater program administration and implementation. www.wegnet.com

Russ Brinsfield - Dr. Brinsfield is the mayor of Vienna, MD and he serves as Director of the Wye Research & Education Center, Executive Director of the Maryland Center for Agro-Ecology, Inc., and is a co-founder of the Eastern Shore Land Conservancy.  http://agresearch.umd.edu/RECs/WREC/index.cfm; http://www.viennamd.org/

Diana Handy – Diana Handy is currently employed as a Stormwater Program Specialist with the Arlington County, Department of Environmental Services. She supports the County’s watershed and stormwater management programs. Her duties include ensuring the County is in compliance with their Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System Permit, which involves coordinating and conducting illicit discharge screening activities, responding to pollution incidents, monitoring water quality, and developing general outreach and stormwater pollution prevention programs.

Ms. Handy earned a B.S. in Environmental Science from Virginia Tech in 1997. In 2000, she received a Masters degree in Environmental Science and Aquatic Resources from the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry. She recently received state certification as a Virginia Erosion and Sediment Control Combined Administrator. Ms. Handy has over 10 years of professional experience in the environmental field working with consulting firms, local governments, and non-profit organizations. She was the Watershed Manager for the planned community of Reston, VA for five years where she developed and implemented the Reston Watershed Management Plan.

She currently serves on the Fairfax County Environmental Quality Advisory Council representing Hunter Mill District. Ms. Handy is active in local environmental activities and has been a volunteer stream monitor and trainer for over 10 years. In her spare time, she enjoys kayaking, fishing, hiking, and traveling.

Kate Herrod - Kate Herrod, Director, has worked in both the for-profit and non-profit worlds. Prior to becoming the Director at Ashoka: Innovators for the Public and running the Community Greens initiative, Ms. Herrod served as the Deputy Director of Development for The Nature Conservancy, overseeing Planned Giving, Trade Lands, Conservation Science Fundraising, as well as Foundation and Corporate Support. Prior to joining the Conservancy, she was a Vice President of commercial real estate at Citibank, Chemical Bank, and Security Pacific Bank in New York City and San Francisco where she underwrote large, commercial real estate projects. Jonathan Kays – Jonathan has a B.S. degree in Natural Resource Management an M.S. Degree in Forestry from Virginia Tech. He has experience as a state forester, research assistant, high school Earth Science teacher, and forestry technician with the U. S. Forest Service.

In 1988 he was hired into new position with responsibility for developing and implementing an integrated extension and research program in natural resources in Maryland. His programs areas include: forest stewardship, backyard forestry, woodland owner volunteer programs (Coverts Project), wildlife damage management for deer and voles, alternative income opportunities utilizing natural resources, and the use of biosolids to grow forest trees on gravel spoils. Jim MacKenzie – Jim MacKenzie graduated from Penn State University with a BS in Landscape Architecture. He worked subsequently in the field and related professions in Philadelphia and Warren, Pennsylvania and Driggs, Idaho until 1993.

In 1994 he became co-owner of Octoraro Native Plant Nursery with company founder Mark Gutshall, and presently manages the business as President.

He is actively involved with the Pennsylvania Landscape and Nursery Association (PLNA), serving on the PLNA Board of Directors as Secretary/Treasurer and the Government Relations Committee.  In 2003 Governor Rendell appointed him to the Statewide Water Resources Committee where he presently serves as Vice-Chair.  www.octoraro.com

Tom Mannion – President and sole employee of Tom Mannion Landscape Design, he has won awards of excellence for his work, and his gardens have been published in many books and magazines.  Eight of his gardens are profiled in the book "Before and After Garden Makeovers" (Sunset Books.  January 2006). Phil Normandy – Phil Normandy is the Plant Collections Manager at Brookside Gardens in Wheaton, MD where he oversees all outdoor horticultural operations at the garden.  He has a B.S. in Ornamental Horticulture and is a Longwood Fellow.  He also teaches woody plants in the Landscape Design Program at Brookside.  www.brooksidegardens.org

Judith A. Gerlach Okay – Dr. Okay has a B.S. in Biology from Siena Heights University in Michigan, an M.S.  in Environmental Science and Public Policy from George Mason University in Virginia and a Ph.D. in Environmental Science and Public Policy from George Mason University.  She has also received Fluvial Geomorphology Training - Dave Rosgen Levels I-IV.  She is currently the Riparian Specialist for Chesapeake Bay Program for which she promotes the benefits and values of riparian forest buffers as an element of Keystone Commitments for CBP, assists Bay states with achieving Chesapeake Bay Goal, compiles, tracks and reports Riparian Forest Buffer accomplishments toward 2010 Bay Goal and works with Bay states to plan and implement riparian forest buffer training for professionals.  Prior to her work with CBP she was a Riparian Specialist with the Virginia Dept. of Forestry and Coordinator of Difficult Run Riparian Project for Virginia Dept. of Forestry.  www.chesapeakebay.net

James Perry – Jim Perry is Vice President and Regional Partner at Elm Street Development.  He has developed properties throughout the Washington region. Rick Scaffidi- Mr. Scaffidi holds a B.S. in Aquatic Ecology from the University of Maryland and a Masters in Horticulture – Thesis; The effects of construction equipment on soil physical and biological properties.

Mr. Scaffidi is Vice President of Environmental Quality Resources, LLC and he manages the Construction and Landscape divisions for the company. EQR, established in 1991, has 125 employees working through the Mid-Atlantic region on a variety of environmental construction and maintenance projects. The construction projects include water quality and water quantity control structures, stream restoration projects, tidal and non-tidal wetland projects, beach and dune replenishment projects and reforestation projects. www.eqri.com

Paula Shrewsbury - Dr. Paula Shrewsbury is an Associate Professor and Extension Specialist on Ornamental and Turf Integrated Pest Management (IPM) in the Department of Entomology at the University of Maryland.  Her responsibilities include research, extension, and teaching on insect pests of ornamental plants and turfgrass.  Her research emphasis is in the development of alternative, less-toxic control tactics, biological control, and community ecology.  Dr. Shrewsbury has been working in IPM for over 18 years.  http://www.lfsc-courses.umd.edu/cv/?department=entm_cv&name=pshrewsb

John Steiner – Mr. Steiner, Operations Manager for NaturaLawn of America, is a seasoned Green Industry professional with over 20 years experience. He has opened and managed lawn care operations throughout the U.S. from Nevada to Maryland.  http://www.nl-amer.com/
